The Iowa class was the largest and final battleship of the U.S. Navy, with four ships commissioned during World War II. The third of these, the Missouri, was commissioned in June 1944. Deployed to the Pacific front, the Missouri saw action in various locations, including supporting the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and bombarding the Japanese mainland. After the war ended, she entered Tokyo Bay at the end of August 1945, and made her mark in history as the setting for the signing of the Instrument of Surrender on September 2nd. Remaining in active service after the war, the Missouri was one of the first to deploy in the Korean War, which broke out in 1950. After that, she was briefly Although placed in reserve, she was recommissioned in 1986 after undergoing modernization with the addition of Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Vulcan Phalanx missiles. Along with her sister ship, Wisconsin, she participated in the 1991 Gulf War, firing 28 Tomahawk missiles on the first day of hostilities and over 750 shells from her 16-inch main guns in support of ground forces. Decommissioned in March 1992, marking the end of her nearly half-century of service, Missouri is now open to the public as a memorial ship at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
