1. เป็นสายสวนหลอดเลือดผ่านสายสะดือ หรือ สายสวนสะดือ อาจเป็นการสวนเข้าหลอดเลือดดำหรือการสวนเข้าหลอดเลือดแดงหรือทั้งสองอย่างก็ได้
2. ใช้สำหรับประกอบการดูแลรักษาทารกแรกเกิดที่ป่วยรุนแรงวิกฤติ และยังเป็นช่องทางเข้าถึงหลอดเลือดได้อย่างรวดเร็วใช้ประโยชน์ได้หลายอย่าง เช่น ให้สารน้ำ ให้ยา ให้สารอาหาร หรือเก็บเลือดส่งตรวจได้ ภาวะแทรกซ้อนที่อาจพบได้เช่นการติดเชื้อหรือการเกิดสิ่งหลุดอุดหลอดเลือด
